Don't Like Layers? Experiment with Colors!

I've got summer styling on the mind, and more specifically, different ways we can play with pieces and not melt within two minutes of walking to the bus. It's a struggle, but I hear it can be done.

While I'm a huge advocate of layering (and have done a bit of clever maneuvering in this outfit here) I think I'm really going to enjoy dabbling in monochrome family hues this summer. Give me different shades of white, varying shades of navy, or, like in this look, a mix of beiges and sands.

It makes for an easy but wonderfully chic look. In this outfit I took a beige summer dress and popped a nude skirt with brown palms on top as my foundation. Then I paired it with white sandals to lighten the brownish palette, and a fun vintage evening clutch (from New Old Fashion Vintage) in a creme color to give the look personality.

The outcome? Something easy, something breezy, but with a whole lot of fun to it.

What do you think? Will you try creating something with just one color palette, or are you a gal that likes something more electric?

  6. I really love the mix of beige and sands in this outfit! I always tend to gravitate towards bright and contrasting colors in summer, but I love the idea of playing around with one color to create a fun summer look that is not all in your face.

  12. This is a great outfit! I love the way you described the colour as beige sands! Your outfit has this great resort style - I love it.
    I can see that top being worn is so many different ways too, maybe with shorts and tying up the shirt for a beach look!

  15. You know, I really like how you define it as "one color palette." This seems an obvious thing to try now that you say it, and I adore this look and its...chic-ness. But I'm not sure I'd have tried the same color palette like that otherwise. It gives you a bit more flexibility and adds a certain softness and femininity to a look where I think a straight monochrome has a bolder, more graphic vibe. All in all a great summer outfit and styling tip!

  18. I think you rock the semi-monochrome quite well actually! Skirts and dresses are the best for beating the heat. Especially maxi dresses, I swear they are equip with like central air or something. (;

  22. You look so pretty! I think I usually tend to stick with the same family of colors when I put something together...but I do need to branch out with brighter colors. I just feel like if I buy something really colorful it won't last as long or be classic like darker colors usually are. Also- your hair always looks super amazing- I'm jealous!

    Long story short, I've found your blog from a comment you posted on my guest post on Clear the Way (2 months ago!) I hadn't seen it until now because I've been in Nepal since then and there's been a lack of proper internet where I am. I see you've been to Nepal as well land am looking forward to seeing those posts!

    I hope we can keep in touch, I really enjoy your writing. Am very interested in Ugly People Beautiful Hearts xx

  34. I think this is lovely! I really need to get my head out of thinking in straight lines...like 'a dress is a dress' and 'a skirt is a skirt'. Your skirt layered OVER a dress is a fabulous idea (and I love the colours too). The silhouette this gives you is wonderful. Lovely photos, too! :)
