3 Outfits That Prove Yes, You Can Be Chic in a Heat Wave

May 21, 2015

Summertime can be a tricky time when it comes to being creative with your outfits. The sun puts on its sunglasses, the pool noodles make their way onto your deck, and you have nothing on your mind but where to get lemonade next and keeping your hair from frizzing into unholy chia-pet proportions.

The last thing you want to think about are layers, and most days zipping up a light summer dress will do. But what if I told you there was a way to both play nice with the heat wave and stay stylish underneath its smiling rays? I teamed up with TrendsGal today to show you it could be done: Below are 3 summer outfits that are simple, unfussy, and completely and totally chic.

Look One: Summer Layering

Whether you're taking a slow stroll for some lavender iced tea at the corner donut shop or are heading out for a second date with a promising young gentleman (/woman), a preppy summer dress can be the answer to all your prayers. But sometimes, zipping it up and heading out the door just doesn't feel satisfying. For moments like those you need an arsenal of easy layering pieces that can bring some unexpected oomph to an outfit.

The pieces need to be thin (because, heat stroke), preferably sleeveless, and boasting a special detail that can turn a pretty look into an amazing one. That's why my eyes lit up when I saw this sleeveless peter pan collar top- it's a white blouse but with a bold, outlined collar. While it'll look plenty cute on its own paired with a skirt or jeans, I knew it would be amazing layered underneath dresses!

Other fun alternatives would be pussybow blouses, ruffled or flaired short sleeve tops (imagine them paired underneath sleeveless dresses) or thin but patterned long sleeve shirts.

Look Two: The Summer Tee

When you think of a stylish outfit, your mind doesn't usually race towards the word "tank top". When you think of yourself having sake bombs at a sushi bar cool with neon, or rifling through a postcard box in a summer flea market, you don't necessarily see yourself looking gorgeous in thin, grey cotton. Those types of moments are usually paired with flirty summer dresses or something of that nature.

But if you know how to play up said summer tee, then the possibilities are there. Try giving a plunging tank top a chic kick by pairing it with trendier, bolder pieces like high waist bell bottoms, or a wildly patterned skirt. It'll be the perfect back drop for a piece that has strong character. Continue to play up the simple staple by focusing on details like draped necklaces and a show-stopping belt, giving yourself the chance to dabble with bolder pieces without coming off as too over-done.

Look Three: The Embroidered Top

Ah, the embroidered top. You can just imagine yourself smelling the peaches at the Sunday farmer's market- with your hair swept up loosely underneath your straw hat- when you look at this shirt. It's feminine, playful, and offers a world of styling possibilities. Everything from popping it underneath a pinafore or overalls, to letting it flow loose and casual over skinny jeans.

Take a hot summer's day as an opportunity to go simple with your outfit but letting it shine with key accessories. For example, pair your embroidered peasant top with a pair of everyday high waist jeans. Then, take the easy look to the next level by adding in a belt with some character and a quirky, earthy-looking purse. Add clunky sandals at your feet for a fun contrast against the feminine look, and you have yourself an unfussy outfit with a lot of style!

  2. Girrrrllll yessss, so in love with all three of these looks! I'm clueless when it comes to summer styling, I usually just chuck on a dress and go. I'm now on the lookout for some cute embroidered tops so I can achieve bohemian goddess status like you <3

  3. Beautiful looks! I love them all, but the first is my favorite. The dress is amazing because it's one of the kind. I really dig the way you styled it with the simple sandals and a boxy small bag.

  6. It has turned to summer over night here in Vancouver and my wardrobe is utterly unprepared. I'll definitely be taking some inspiration from your second look - love that combination of flares and clogs!

  7. I'm obsessed with that Trendsgal top... $7?! There has to be a catch. LOVE it!
I couldn't make a tank top look that trendy if I tried. lol. You have some mad skill. But I do love how easily you can transition such a basic piece into a statement. Sushi and flea market approved. (:
I love peasant tops. The flowy hide-my-mom-skin factor is the best! Oh and they make the BEST maternity tops without actually having to buy maternity clothes. I lived in them when I was pregnant.
Thanks for all these great pairing tips. Now I want to eat sushi, shop and the local flea market, and frolic through the farmers market in my summer best. (; Have a lovely weekend!

  8. Outfit number 3. I need that on my body like now. NOW, I tell you! But seriously, heat waves don't have to be bad at all! I love to wear breezy dresses and stick my hair in a bun on the hottest of hot days.

  17. LOVE all three looks, especially the first with the dress! DC humidity makes me really reluctant to layer up at all but you're totally right about the key being light fabrics. I like the totally mod feel of the look - very preppy and retro!

  19. I love all of these, but that first outfit is my absolute favorite. I thought you were wearing three different pieces, to be honest. The top of the dress juxtaposed with the striking collar of the top underneath is beyond perfect. Well done!

  21. These are all such great outfits! When it is really hot outside, usually my go-to is either a sundress or a crop top and denim cut offs! But these are super cute for the heat too. Although wearing jeans my lead me to stay in the AC but that's not a big deal :)

  26. These are all so cute! I really love the first one especially! The top goes so well with the dress I thought it was all one piece until I read the description! You are really great at this! I also love how modest these are--such a contrast from the short shorts and bra-lets that I think most people turn toward in times of heat!

  35. lol @ unholy chia-pet proportions in terms of hair. Yep. I feel like the instant I walk out, I sweat and have to take a shower the instant I get back inside. I don't know why I keep working out in the mornings with this heat but apparently I like to torture myself.

That being said, number two is my jam because I love a simple shirt with accessories right now. It's all I can manage!

  36. Hey Marlen! This comes at a great time because of the miserable, mirage-like heat we've been having in Nashville! I love the Summer Tee look- such a chic, boho way to dress up a basic tank! Thanks for sharing. Hope you are having a marvelous Summer and staying cool!

    ♥ perfectly Priya
