About two weeks ago my cousin turned to me and was all, "You want to go to New Orleans tomorrow?" My first response was a knee-jerk "are you nuts?" but when I took a second to think about it, I came to the realization that there was no real reason not to. If I'm in the mood for an adventure, an adventure I will have. So we rented a car, bought an unholy amount of chocolate chip cookies and Cheetohs, and drove the fourteen hours it took to get down south.

And I seriously think New Orleans stole my heart. All that blues in hot, dark rooms; all those Pimms Cups under happy umbrellas, the crawfish dumped onto tables spread out in newspapers, all the French balconies and popsicle-colored houses, all the hustle of jazz on street corners and bustle of artists along wrought iron fences. Everything was so alive. It was all heat, smiles, and color. This city- oh this city was definitely my first summer love affair.

  16. Wow! Looks fun :D

Also a little jealous you can get there in 14 hours. Not a short trip to be sure, but in 14 hours I can get to, like Fargo. Or somewhere in Idaho.

  19. I love New Orleans! It's a gorgeous city, and it just feels so different from any other place that I've been, either in the US or abroad. I've been a couple of times, and both times it was crazy fun. Of course, part of that might have been because I was more than a little drunk the entire time...
Apparently Pullman offers rail service from Chicago to New Orleans on the vintage style cars, I've been seriously thinking about making the trip that way.

  25. Awesome! I remember seeing some posts from Nola on Instagram. It sounds like it was a fun trip! That drive down south is so long though ugh! It's only 11 hours to Atlanta though! I love all these colorful houses you captured. I've never been but I'd love to check it out sometime.

  30. In all seriousness, I feel like I am supposed to live in New Orleans. Everything about that place is just magic to me. I cant find the ugliest thing and love it. It's strange, my family thinks I'm nuts, but I just love it. Thank you for sharing these photos. I really made this blah day better!

  31. it looks like you had so much fun! Haha- another example of how I would freak out and probably not go...but I really should take a cue from you and be a bit more spontaneous. I LOVE all the colorful and bright window shutters. That's a long drive- but you were close to Arkansas (somewhat!) too! I hate crawfish- did you eat any? I like the potatoes and corn that go with it but the idea of sucking something's brains out...yuck! (weenie alert). Brock and I have an Uncle who lives in NOLA so we really need to visit!

  33. Hell yeah! Spontaneity is one of life's little joys. I remember some of these photos from Instagram so I am so so glad you decided to share them all at once! I need a vacation. :(

  34. I have always wanted to visit New Orleans ~ as a huge old blues fan, it makes me curious to visit a city where blues is an everyday affair. I can only dream through your photographs but hope one day to know the feeling of a New Orleans breath of fresh air.

    Hugs

  36. Sometimes you just gotta be spontaneous, right? I'm happy you said yes to that spur of the moment trip! Opportunities to travel become less and less as we get older..... more involved in work, have more responsibilities, etc.
You had me at the popsicle-colored houses! Everything looks just so beautifully eclectic there! I hope I get the chance to visit one day!

  41. These are gorgeous photos Marlen! I want to go back there so bad! Last time was for Jazz Fest with a big group of friends so I didn't get to explore the way I normally like to. A spontaneous road trip that's 14 hours each way?! I'm impressed :)

  42. I would love to go to New Orleans! Daniel was there as a kiddo but even then he realized how special it was and is also in my wagon to go there together when we have the chance! I love that you joined the impromptu travel withnyour cousin. Did you stay on the apartment that appears in the pictures? Awww the colors...swoon!

  45. Ah, I'd looove to go to New Orleans! Really lovely pictures, Marlen, I like the first one because there's just something about the combination of red and blue that is so eye-catching and perfect. This city is definitely on my list of places to visit when I finally save enough money to take a roadtrip across the US. I hope it's just like in the pictures :)
