I have been loving all the Mexican embroidery pieces that have been popping up all over the place lately- the cheery thread colors are so summery and playful, and it's fun to find ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe in a modern way. Like, say, underneath overalls perhaps? ;) And while there are many places to get them, I'd really like to point you towards my friend's store, Mitla Moda. Dus is the mastermind behind it, and she actually operates the store at a loss. She travels down to Mexico herself with her husband, meets the artisans herself, learns about their process, and then buys their pieces to sell back here in the States. Then once she does sell the item, she gives 100% of the profits back to the artisans. She's passionate about giving the designers all that they're due and upholding fair-trade, and that kind of dedication is inspiring. So if you have been keeping an eye out for an embroidery piece of your own, consider checking out Mitla Moda and helping her fair-trade cause!

And here are some of my favorite picks from Mitla Moda, to give you an idea of what they have:

  1. this embroidered top is so pretty! i like it worn w/your overalls (which are really cute, btw!) i've mostly been seeing shortalls this summer, so it's fun to see the longer version styled.

  2. Me too, so into this style of top and I love yours with the overalls - cutest look around!! Hope you're having a fabulous day, sweet girl! xoxo

  3. So excited to see a mitla top on here, I love how you styled it!!! I have a gift card to H&M and I adore the overalls, going to try to hunt them down!!! :)

  4. Love the top! Styled well! xx

  6. I'm usually not a pants person at all, but this is one of my favorite things from you lately! It's super cute and effortless. You just need some binoculars and sunnies to belong in Moonrise Kingdom.

  7. I love overalls, I wish they could look good on me! You are rocking it and tje blouse detail is beautiful

  8. such a great look. that tee is really perfect for summer :) x lashingsofmascaraon.blogspot.ie

  9. Gorgeous! I'll definitely be checking her site out. Women like that always inspire me. :)

  10. Wow she sounds like a saint. Its always nice to help out artists, especially when their work is as beautiful as that top. P.S. you sure can rock overalls!

  11. Wow it was really nice hearing about your friend's business-Mitla Moda. It's really cool how she goes down to Mexico, buys their products, and gives all the money back. If they are anything like the shirt you're wearing, then they must be beautiful!
Anyway, I must say that this outfit definitely looks like something Zooey Deschannel would wear. I know you watch New Girl, so I thought you would appreciate:)

  16. I love that top and the story behind it! I always like hearing about fair trade and small business in this world of fast fashion and large corporations :)

  17. I have been looking for some rad overalls. These look great! And yeah Dus is so cool and that's the exact way a business like that should be run. I love it.

  18. Love this outfit on you! Just featured it on my facebook page :) Also, that's really amazing about your friend's shop. I love shops that hold ethics. It makes me want to support them and what they are trying to do. Isn't it strange though how it's riskier for small shops to be ethical over big companies and yet it's usually the small shops that bother.

    Great pictures and post :)

    1. Thanks for such a kind comment Hailes! I couldn't help but read over the comments on Marlen's post for some much needed encouragement & boy is it giving me some! You are sure right in that it's a big risk for small shops, but I've still got my fingers crossed it'll work out : ). Thanks for your support!

  19. I have been searching for a good pair of overalls FOREVER. Were these recently found at H&M? If so I'm getting my butt over to the mall right now, lol. And 1000x yes to Mexican embroidery, I feel like it's perfect for summer! :)

  20. What a great cause! I will have to go check them out, for sure!

Love the overall styling here - I just bought a pair, so I'm glad I have you to inspire me.

  21. I LOVE these overalls so much. Most of the time, I can only find overalls that have a very loose fit, which I'm not a big fan of. These, on the other hand, look perfect! And I love the top you paired it with underneath (:

  22. That's definitely a cause I can get behind! Cool! I've been on the hunt for a white embroidered blouse also, but never seem to find one that's just right. The search continues.

  23. Seriously such an amazing shop Dus is running! I love the pieces and even more that you know where they are coming from and that she is supporting these artisans! I love how these overalls are modernized with the skinny legs- I really went crazy with baggy overalls in the 90s and still have a bit of a fear of them :) You look amazing!

  24. Thank you so much for your kind words about Mitla Moda Marlen!! I appreciate your support to much as I work to grow this little business : ). And, wow, you nailed this look!! You look just gorgeous in the top + the overalls - those are an awesome modern take on the 90's style.
