Do you remember this Fight for Flight Vintage dress from a recent "What to Wear to a" post? Well I snapped it up! And I originally wanted to style it in an edgy and downtown-sophisticated type of a way, one where I could see myself sitting cross legged at a trendy bar, eating the olive that came with my Manhattan as I try not to rub the red off from my lips.

But then I realized that I...owned...nothing....sophisticated. So.

That was a problem.

The dream had to be scrapped. But in the end it worked out because I found another way that I could style it without dying in the summer heat. And my answer to that is my answer to everything: pop a chambray over it. Seriously, this top is the workhorse of my closet. I have a hard time not wearing it. And I like how it basically acts like a vest but isn't one. And it's an easy layer to add on when it's hovering around 80 outside but you want to be a little more creative than just zipping up a dress. What do you think- would you try it?

And Fight for Flight Vintage is a fun little boutique that has a sharp eye for 80's and 90's items. Right now they have an abundance of grungy flower dresses, printed high waist jeans, and leopard dresses! Here are some of my favorite picks from there to give you an idea of what they're all about:

  1. Chambray can do no wrong! Great styling idea! I laughed out loud when I read the part that you "owned...nothing...sophisticated." - shame you had to scrap that idea but at least this new look is super cute!

  2. such a cute print! i love the layering of the chambray top. i actually have a denim vest stored away in my closet. it was my mom's in the 90s (is that considered vintage yet?) anyway, anytime i try to bring it out of retirement, i get the once over from my husband, paired with, "is that what your wearing??" needless to say, it hasn't made out out of the house yet lol

  3. Ugh, I hate that realization that the scenario you've been imagining simply does not have a realistic outfit to be found in your wardrobe to go along with it in real life. Major ugh.

Buuuut, I love how you styled the chambray shirt with the knot in front! So summery and chic!

  8. I love the tropical print! I often find myself buying tropical prints at thrift stores when its summer but then when I get home I find myself thinking its too costumey. Like so much so that I only wore one to a luau themed party I went to last year. Maybe its in the print that I buy too much blatantly aloha hawaii and not enough subtle sophisticated beach girl….

  10. Haha, it really is a signature piece out of your closet. But it makes for the perfect layering piece!
I love the tropical print, it reminds me of a vest I have...now if only I had a denim dress, than I could replicate your outfit, only inverted! :D

  15. I definitely need to get a top like that. All summer I have been dying to wear denim jackets over everything, but that isn't exactly practical in 90 degree weather. This top looks to be the solution!

  16. Aren't chambray shirts just the best? I have a long sleeved one that I wear with the majority of my dresses and skirts. Yours looks perfect with this dress.

  17. I've said it a million times but you are the QUEEN of layering! I would never think of reworking a dress like this but you've definitely planted the seed in my mind...

  18. It's a perfect piece for layering! It's a very quirky piece too and really suits you. I have a jacket that I always wear with everything, sometimes I think I overwear it but it makes me feel really good so I don't care =)

  21. The shoulders on that dress are FANTASTIC. I love that they're even more exaggerated because of the vest and yes I would wear that with everything in the summer. It is such a great piece!
