So I have a bit of a confession: I am one laaazy person. If it were up to me I'd just sloth around in my bed all day, hiding under blankets and binge watching The Nanny, occasionally ringing a bell for my brother to bring me a strawberry smoothie or something to that effect.

But I'm also a person that makes a lot of plans she semi-desperately wants to achieve, so I have to find a balance between my two personalities: the couch potato and the dreamer.

Granted, sometimes the slob wins and I do a whole lot of nothing the entire day. And sometimes we need that; to not get trapped in the idea that being busy equals being fulfilled. I don't know about you, but sitting on my deck with my feet propped on the railing and the sun playing behind my eyes makes me feel pretty damn fulfilled.

But if I did that everyday then I'm pretty sure both my mom and I would start worrying that I'll be one of those forty year olds still living at home. So when I start feeling like my motivation is waning, there are two quotes that always pops into mind and light a fire under me:

"If it's important to you, you'll find a way. If it's not, you'll find an excuse."

and

"Ask yourself if what you are doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow."

I like the first one because it makes me sad when I start making excuses to not work on a goal that's important to me- it's like I'm admitting I don't think it's all that important.  And the second one puts into perspective how I'm spending my day- have I brought myself closer to what I want? Or have I watched one too many episodes of The Nanny?

Seeing how it's Monday and a brand new week, hopefully these two thoughts will help inspire you, too :)

And do you remember this New Old Fashion Vintage dress? I decided to do a little layering and play up its sophisticated-French-woman vibe by popping a striped shirt underneath. This is exactly why sleeveless dresses are my favorite- there's so much styling potential involved. They have a bunch more of other dresses just like this one in stock, as well as a $15 and under sale going on right now! Below are some of my favorite picks to give you an idea what New Old Fashion has right now:

  4. I feel like I'm caught between those two personalities as well. There are times when I can't convince myself to get up from the couch, and other times when I make so many plans I'm not sure how I'll keep them all. All social complexities aside, I love your dress. Very patriotic as well, considering the season :) xx

  5. First of all, you look amazing! Second of all, I totally hear you on the lazy vs. productive front. I always need a day or so each week to just do nothing. It sure helps me recharge!

  12. That top and dress are so perfect together, and look lovely on you, mademoiselle!

I like what you wrote about achieving a balance, and not getting "trapped in the idea that being busy equals being fulfilled." Sometimes the most important and fulfilling moments of our day-to-day lives are difficult to quantify. Also, I think that sometimes we find excuses because we're afraid or ambivalent, but it is essential to check in with ourselves about what's most important to us. Anyway, I ramble - clearly your post provoked a lot of thoughts :)

  14. That dress is fabulous! I totally agree with having no work and no school its easy to get in a rut of feeling like a netflix marathon is productive. Luckily I have both starting soon, my favorite quote is the ask yourself what you are doing today to get yourself closer to where you want to be tomorrow

  15. So simple! So fresh! I love how you have these awesome striped arms to compliment the dress and the bag. Gurl, you look like you below in Paris right now.

  16. As a fellow lazy person, I feel super guilty when I end up putting things off I know have to get done. For some reason, when I know I have to do something or accomplish a goal, the more daunting the task seems to appear. Then I start doing other "fun" things and get distracted. I think I'm going to save that quote on my phone because I think I need to reintroduce some gumption in my life.
Your outfit is just adorable. is that the same mod dress I liked a few posts back?? LOVE how it looks layered. Obviously that dress can do no wrong :]

  19. That first quote immediately made me think about how I've been meaning to add cardio to my workout...sigh. Guess I know where it falls on the totem pole of importance...aha.
I have a tendency to fall on the lazy side myself as well, it's so hard to get motivated!! >_<

  25. I surprise myself with how incredibly lazy I can be! It seems the more things I have to do, the lazier I get. But the feeling of accomplishment is nice too and probably the only thing that keep me semi motivated. Those two quotes are definitely inspiring!

  26. Great inspiration, Marlen! I'm also someone who can feel totally content and fulfilled through lazing around, but my full-time job has forced me to break out of that this year, which has been an interesting exercise. The challenge in the future is to find a good balance of productivity and relaxation that matches my standards of achievement and not those set by the Type-A standards often purveyed as normal. Phewf! Love your outfit here too, as always. You know I'm a sucker for stripes :)

  27. A day in bed watching The Nanny is definitely a day I'd like to have, but I'd never let myself have. I feel like I have those two personalities that I have a difficult time balancing, as well. Even when I'm trying to relax, I'm constantly thinking about something productive I should be doing, and that thought ends up making me not able to really relax. It's definitely something I need to get working on, stat.

  33. dude i feel like this post is from a journal entry of mine because i struggle with this same thing! being a lazy couch potato vs. having legit dreams that i want to achieve. finding balance between these things is freaking hard! lol.

  34. This dress is adorable!! I love it. I feel like I am a sloth / dreamer as well -- I fluctuate between wanting to do EVERYTHING or NOTHING at all. Finding a balance is a continual struggle.

This is a gorgeous outfit! I tried on something really similar the other day but it wasn't as nice as this and I didn't buy it, I might have to continue the search though because I really love this!

  38. I m in a middle of my thesis and I don't know if I am lazy or I am just overwhelmed but sometimes I also lack a strength to pursue what I really want, And I want it, just, u know...I am sure u do:) Ur outfit reminds me of the song 'French Navy' by Camera Obscura;-) Lovely x

  43. You know, I am kind of the same way as well. I can be completely lazy sometimes, but also a big dreamer with outrageous goals. I think the 2 quotes are great. Sometimes it's all you need to get a push out of the lazy state! Also, love this look. Very Parisian chic indeed!
