Thrifting 101: Kitschy Vests

May 31, 2014

Sometimes I walk through a thrift store and something borderline insane catches my eye. And instead of cringing and moving on, I find myself pausing and going "hmmm". As if I can somehow see myself wearing this borderline insane thing. And more often times than not, I end up buying it and doing just that! There's a way to make most pieces work in an outfit if you style it carefully, and in today's post we're going to take a few kitschy items and see how we can move them into "normal" territory :)  And hopefully this post will make you catch some gems you'd otherwise pass up next time you go thrifting!

  2. I love this series and love that you can explain your choices. Here is to the collection of questions for you: how do you start your outfits? What comes first - your mood, an occasion, a particular piece, the weather.......? And do you dress intuitively and then look at what's in common and analyze your own outfit like that, or do you first consider 1-2-3 rules and then find pieces which work with the rules? Just curious. :) xxx

  9. UM YES this is like the perfect post because there is nothing more Marlen than her sweet-ass vests. Specially that motherfuckin' floral vest. AWW YISS. Love that guy.

  10. I'm a big fan of the corduroy vest! I tend to shy away from "loud" clothing items, but mostly because they are difficult to pair. I will keep these suggestions in mind!

I love how you make these vests that most people would think are ugly into something so cute and perfect with your outfits :)

  13. Hmmmm… I am not sure I can do a vest with such a boxy/masculine shape, BUT you are right, looking a little closer at items you may otherwise pass up can unearth some beautiful gems!

  15. That vest looks amazing on you! You basically make any thrifted thing look good where as I am so tiny that I can't ever seem to find thrifted things that look good on me other than shorts.

  16. OK, so I dunno if its a recent or TBT photo, but did you cut your hair?!?! Love you in the pixie cut.
And your description about integrating kitschy vest into the wardrobe is basically why I follow your blog (and also what makes you pretty unique in a kinda saturated blog world).
