Floral Skirts Inspire Kindness

I've always been a firm believer in not expecting kindness and loveliness out of other people, but expecting kindness and loveliness out of me. We can't control how other people will act in their day to day- how they'll answer a phone, how they'll treat a stranger on a train, how they'll react at work- but we can always be sure how we'll respond. And I think it's safe to say that most will test our patience throughout the day. But instead of adding to the frayed nerves and deep scowls, why don't we change the pattern and try kindness, instead? Why don't we go for patience, be more understanding than necessary, give them all a second chance?  And I've been called a weenie for doing that more than I should in the past, but I feel like the effort is greater to be sour than to not. Because if we both wait till the other person does it, we'll be waiting a long time.

As Marvin J. Ashton said: “Be the one who nurtures and builds. Be the one who has an understanding and a forgiving heart, one who looks for the best in people. Leave people better than you found them.”

And when you wear pretty floral skirts, it's easy to think happy, light-hearted thoughts. This pretty number is from the Etsy store Little Miss Vintage 3, and I already get the sense it'll become a summer staple this season. I love it's cheerful mix of red, teal, and yellow colors, and the print is subtle enough to perhaps mix it with another print (like I did in this post).  I went for a casual, summer look with this outfit, and I really liked how tying the chambray in a knot at the bottom gave it a more playful touch than just tucking it into the skirt's waistband. Little details like that really do make all the difference! And if you find yourself fancying this skirt, be sure to check out Little Miss Vintage 3 here because they have a bunch more just like this one! They also have an overstock of embroidered dresses, floral shorts, and summer-lovin tops, so ya won't be disappointed!

And here are some more summery picks from Little Miss Vintage 3- can we talk about that chambray one? Hearts in my eyes.

  1. I completely agree - kindness is magic. (Said Ricky Gervais :p - comedian yet role model, obviously) Kindness is everything, and so is a positive happy attitude - it can change lives. You loo amazing, love the bag and tied up shirt. Sending you thursday love!

  2. Kindness definitely has better results than feeding off of people's bad attitudes. I don't see how feeling that way could make you a weenie! And, this outfit..oh my goodness. It's gotta be one of my favorites of yours so far!

  5. I completely agree! Working in the service industry I encounter a huge amount of snobby, cranky, or just plain disagreeable people (though most people are up here on vacation, so I don't understand why they're not enjoying it?! Come on, people!). I always choose the 'kill 'em with kindness' route and put on my best sugary sweet act, even though at times I'd love nothing more to pour a margarita right in their laps. They usually leave feeling better than when they came in, and maybe are a bit sheepish regarding their crabbiness.

Love how you knotted that blouse - so nice and summery! :)

  10. I love love love this outfit! Shirts tied at the waist have always appealed to me, I think because it's very retro. And adorable. And that skirt! So pretty!
I had the realization the other day that I need to be the change I want to see in other people, and that I really shouldn't expect to change someone else. I got so much more productive because of it! I love the quote you said, because that's sort of along the same vein. So good.

  11. I love that. I think that we need to treat others how we want to be treated. I think sometimes its hard to not let one bad thing get in the way of a good day but I think its even better when you do not let it get to you and rub that negative energy onto other people

  19. This pretty floral skirt fits into your philosophy beautifully!
The world may be a sarcastic, demeaning, angry place, but it's people who think like you that make it brighter. While we can't be sure how other people may react, we at least know ourselves and can control our outlook! Lovely reminder Marlen :)

  27. You are wonderful, beautiful and amazing - rare rare rare soul! The skirt is very cheerful, such a vibrant pattern. I am the one who gives about two thousand chances all at once - generous, I know. It is probably much smarter to give only a second chance. :) Heart has a power to heal all by itself, with the help of kind and loving people. But there are times when I demand kindness from others in response. I just leave when I don't get it after those 2000 chances. I am not going to talk about it in public though - not until my words are finally prettier than silence. With love xxxxx

  28. You're the cutest, and I love these words! I am a firm believer that we can't ever change somebody else's attitude, only our own. And I really do believe that despite the many differences, most people truly are kind-hearted people. We just sometimes have o look a little deeper to see it! Love your outfit! and love you Marlen! xoxo.

  36. I loved reading this - it was something I really needed to hear after having a very rough week! I've been disappointed with the way some people treat others but I think that it may be unfair to expect kindness from everyone. I can only treat people with respect and dignity and hope people respond with the same. Thank you so much for writing this and reminding me to take back control of my outlook on life!

On a sartorial note, your floral skirt is LOVELY! I absolutely adore the length and the pattern is unapologetically beautiful - just like you!

It's been a while since I've been on the blogosphere but I'm currently trying to catch up on your blog. I'll have a post up soon so hope you'll stop by!

  38. You are so right! I've definitely found it easier to respond with kindness since I've stopped working in restaurants and having to deal with people's crap every day :) But there's still always room for improvement- haha. I love this skirt, I wish it were a summer staple in MY closet! Perfectly paired with the chambray!

  40. That's always something I've struggled with, but in the end I've always felt better when I am in the mindset of giving rather than receiving. I read a study once that the brain's reward system is set off even more when buying a gift for someone else, rather than oneself. (Pooh on me for not having a link to this.)

  41. that is such a lovely way of looking at life! i tend to think that most people will be awful anyway no matter how i act, which results into me being lovely at times and not-so-lovely at other times. i should think more like you, though! and the print of that skirt really is wonderful:-) xx

  42. I'm so in love with this outfit! It's perfect for Spring/Summer and has such happy colors. It's hard to give people second chances. I read somewhere that it takes people a total of 12 encounters to "rid themselves" of a bad first impression. Cray right? So if I meet someone that I felt was "bitchy" per say it's gonna take me at least a few years to get over that first encounter. Dang! Lol.... it's hard to kick your gut instinct and or impressions of people... but hey, they could be struggling with something horrible in their lives right?
    xoxo
