Why Do I Even Keep Going?

SHIRT: c/o Honeymoon Muse (similar: here)
SWEATER: Forever 21
PANTS: American Apparel
SHOES: Urban Outfitters (similar: here)
BELT: thrifted

Can I just take a moment and freak out over this outfit? This is probably my favorite one this whole month- I can't get over how good the checkered sweater looks with that red floral print. I'm definitely going to be wearing this look into the ground. Ok, freak out over.

SO, gather round gals because I went on another date this week and it has been another doozy. All I want to do is put on a cloud of perfume and talk in a dimly lit corner with a handsome boy- is that too much to ask? I don't think that's such a tall order, am I right? I don't understand why the universe keeps passing me duds. But let's start from the beginning.

I met this boy in a retro-diner-but-actually-a-bar place in one of my favorite neighborhoods, and as I pulled the door open I found it to be completely empty except for him at the bar, already nursing a beer. I kind of liked that. I felt like I just stepped into a noir film, what with the low hanging, dim lights and the scarred, wooden bar. And I even had red lipstick on. So I walked over to him, tapped him on the shoulder, and gave him a big, excited smile. And just as he said "hi" I already knew I wasn't going to like him.

Haha, okay, before you roll your eyes you know how it is. You can already get a sense of a person- an inkling- from that first hello. And his was really nervous and slightly aloof. But undeterred, I sat down and forced him to be chatty as the bartender came over and asked me what I'd be having. I ordered a beer and she asked if I wanted to open a tab. And I'm not exactly old-fashioned, but if I drive all the way down from the suburbs to spend time at a bar that's right around the corner from your apartment, the polite thing to do is at least buy me a drink. But he made no move. So I opened my own. I was clearly getting wooed tonight.

And then I embarked on a two-hour long stint where I basically had to coax and weed stories out of him, just so I didn't have to hear myself talk the whole evening. And he was comically bad at telling stories. My favorite moment was when I asked him what his favorite part of Vegas was and he told me the parking lots. I was like kaaay, why's that?, thinking (hoping) there were like trapeze artists doing tricks from the rafters as you circled the lot, trying to find a parking spot. But his answer wasn't as exciting. It was because there were lights that...shone red or green to let you know if a spot is open. So you're in the city of sin, and your favorite part of it is that you can find parking without much trouble. Biting back a sigh, I nodded my head and ordered a second, much needed beer. That went on my own tab.

  1. First- those shoes!! I've been eyeing them forever and haven't made the plunge! Love them and love them on you!!
Second- oh.my.gosh. I can't tell you how much I can relate to your dating experience. That is the worst, I'm so sorry! The least a person can do, whether there is interest or not, is be kind, engaging, and help the night be enjoyable since you both went out of your way to meet up! Ug! I'm so sorry. But I've so been there. :P

  2. please tell me you're using Tinder? my sister has been daily updated me on her dates too.

omg- I would not even know what to do in this situation. like, how did you end this? just say byeeee after the parking lot story (in VEGAS?! are you KIDDING ME?! he could have said LITERALLY anything else and that would have been a better answer.) dear me. I'm also very put off that the just sat there and let you buy all your own drinks. where have all the good men gone? can't wait for the next edition!

  3. Ohhh ouch -- that poor guy really was a dud, wasn't he? I am sending you good vibez for the next one!
Also, when I saw that first outfit shot, I had a mini freakout too -- who knew that the gingham-y print would go SO WELL with the bright floral top? I definitely did not...but I love it :)

  4. Looove your outfit! major love! sorry to read about your terrible date, a parking lot lights lover does not sound very fun, hahaha, however your story was indeed! you keep me with a smile all along :) Thanks for sharing, and wish you a much better date on the next one!

  5. Hahah, oh jeez, that wasn't a very pleasant evening :D. I know these kind of guys, they're just the worst. No manners, no interest, they just "are". C'mon!
Love your writing btw <3 :)!

  6. Girl, you look amazing in this outfit! It is definitely freak out worthy :) On one of my first dates with my ex I paid for our whole bottle of rum.. and I wasn't even 21! (he was 22). Needless to say, it didn't work out so yeah, good for you for not settling for a guy who won't even buy you a beer.

  8. Wow! You look so chic dear! Love your top and cardigan ♥

  9. First of all, I think this is my fave looks of yours too! I love the cardigan.

I'm sorry about the dating stuff. I do have to admit, I like reading about it though only because you make it so easy to imagine and entertaining (you're such a good writer!). I'm not old fashioned either, but he should have at LEAST offered to buy you the first drink. What a cheap-o! Not because he is the man, but because you were invited on the date by him, I'd gather.

  10. First off, that's terrible. However, it does make for a great story! And loving the red shirt with the sweeter too.

  14. i really love the checkered&floral prints together, too! and ohh, you seem to have the worst of lucks and i kind of feel bad about saying that i really enjoy reading about your unfortunate dating experiences, haha:-) at least you do have dates, that's a good thing, right? xx

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're so right, the checkered sweater looks great with the floral print shirt! I love florals mixed with other prints. And what an unfortunate boy encounter! I suppose dating largely consists of weeding out the bad ones, eh. That boy sounds too boring for you anyways!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ugh, MEN! Am I right?

And I'm so glad that you freaked out about this outfit, 'cause I'm going to, too! I love it! It's one of my favorites of yours. Something about those two pieces makes me want to do that thing that Italian chefs do with their hand. And the kissing sound. Ugh, please tell me you know what I mean.

And I think you've found the most perfect shade of lipstick! It suits all your tones so well!

  17. The combination of these two prints is amazing! Also lovely lipstick colour!

  19. I think I'm nearly in love with your outfit as you are. You look great! That top and those pants look killer on you. Omg, I love hearing your date stories, but as much as I love hearing about the ones that didn't go so well I hope you go on a date soon with a boy that knocks you right off you feet!

Sorry that you had to put up with another dull date, but hopefully all of these are leading up to the perfect one (or one who will at least buy a girl a drink!) :-)
Love that blouse and sweater combo! They do go together swimmingly!

  21. OH my goodness. What a date. Sometimes I wish I had more dating experience just so I could tell the stories, but... no. Haha! I'm totally with you on the whole he-should-have-bought-your-drink thing! And it's annoying when you try to talk to people and they're unresponsive. *Sigh*
But hey, you look fabulous! I think this is one of my favorite looks of yours ever, too! That cardigan and the shirt are a fantastic combination that I would never stop wearing, if I were you!

  22. That sounded like an awkward time! >_< He probably should have had another drink or two before you arrived haha. Maybe it was nerves or lack of social skills? The answer to the Vegas bit.. uhhhhhhhh nope.

  24. hahah i have loved this story Marlen! first, you are WAY more outgoing than I am, I dont think i've ever tapped a stranger on the shoulder and said hello and started off a convo like that, even w/ women and i LOVE that you did! well, good to know he's boring/not your type from 2 hrs and 2 beers than a few months of dating right? also, i have to agree about the top/cardi, so pretty together & you're looking just gorgeous yourself!

    ReplyDelete
  25. He definitely should have bought the drink. People these days. On the plus side, this set of photos is really cute and I love how your hairstyle is looking!

on an outfit note, that top plus that cardigan = heaaaaven. AND YOU TALK ABOUT ME BEING CUTE WHATEVER LOOK AT YOU LOOKING ALL FLAWLESS

  34. What is it with the guys today!!!??? They don't know how to hold a conversation anymore! Or rather, they know all the prerequisite small talk, polite questions, but when it comes to connecting with someone and sharing stories, they just fail. -_-
Anyway, sorry about that dud. Makes me laugh but feel frustrated for you at the same time. Aha, one day you'll run into the right guy. One that'll actually woo you. Oh, and buy your beer ;)

  38. Hahaha awww! That sounds awful! But hey, at least you're going on dates? I can't even talk to a guy if I think it's heading past the friend zone. I'm REALLY good at making guy friends, but dates? Not so much. So at least you got a good story out of it! And seriously the check and the floral is genius together!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I LOVE your outfit and lip color. This is spring with an edge and I really dig it. As for the guy, ugh he sounded so lame. A lot of guys at my university were exactly like that but then again what can I expect from a student body that prides itself for being named the top party school back in 2006. Some people are just ridiculous.

  41. "All I want to do is put on a cloud of perfume and talk in a dimly lit corner with a handsome boy- is that too much to ask?" considering getting this tattooed on my forehead haha. Such truth.

I actually laughed out loud at the thought of this guy telling you that his favourite part of vegas was the parking lot. And, can I just say, I have such outfit envy. I like to think I dress fairly well and I coordinate and such but I've never had this awesome ability to bring an outfit to life. You have a talent there :)

Btw, sometimes it's good to give a person a second chance, even though he might seem like a complete ass. My friend went on a date two months ago, couldn't stop complaining about how awkward and looser the boy was... But after a few more dates, she liked him so much, they're officially together.. People are weird, is all I'm saying :D

  55. Oh goodness! I really dislike that this happened to you, but I really enjoyed the way you told the tale! If it makes you feel any better, Soldier Boy and I are going on 2.5 years together and he's still super skilled at being a dud! Also… I know exactly what type of parking lot your Dudley is talking about and (yeah… I'm kind of cringing here) I love them in Europe. I'd never seen one until last summer and thought it was the coolest idea (especially since SB's car is gigantic compared to Euro standards) so parking tends to be a biznatch! Ok… now… let's talk clothes: I. Want. Those. Shoes. And red lips are perfect on you.
