Layering 101: The Closet Matters

Mar 26, 2014

A lot of you asked me to start up a series that touches on layering tips and ideas, so here ya go! While the biggest comment I see on my posts is usually "I'd look frumpy wearing that", we're going to tackle that one later. Instead we'll move to the second comment, which is usually "I'd never think of that!" And honestly, I probably wouldn't have either if I didn't have my closet organized the way I did.

While most people coordinate their closet by color or season, I organize mine by layering potential. For example, I have my blouses broken up into three sections: pussy bow blouses (they look adorable layered under high necked dresses), turtlenecks, collared shirts, and collarless tops. That way if I feel like a turtleneck would look cute under a certain type of shirt, I'd have all my turtleneck options in one spot (and then I can get playful with the patterns or colors available.)

To give you an idea how this helps, I made a little diagram that shows in what exact order I have my clothes hanging, along with tips on why that certain position helps you get more creative while trying to style a certain piece. And if you have any questions or ideas while going through this, leave them in the comments :)

  1. This is so unique! I usually organize my closet by color, so I never would have thought of this! If only I had more separates, I'd definitely this out (:

  9. I love this post! I really like the way you organize your closet. I would not have thought about it like that. I really like the layering look, I just don't give myself enough time to try out new things. I really need to because I love your style! :)

  10. I'm looking to organize my closet soon, so this is great. I'll be following your tips. I have mine organized similarly, but I like your tips. They are great for quick grab-together outfits!

  11. um, this is absolutely magical. I never thought of organizing everything by layering potential... mine is just done by shirts/skirts/dresses/etc, and then funnel those down by color, hahaha. I feel like I just need more pieces--I just did a big cleanout over the winter break and am lacking in lots of sleeveless dresses that layer well and basic prints. I never realized how sad it was that I just got my first b/w striped sweater a month ago. :D

  12. I really never thought of organizing this way! I have one closet for warm weather and one for cold weather (though when I get bored with one, I like to throw a couple of off-season pieces in with the on-season bits). I've been thinking of organizing by shirt type just because since I started teaching dance, I've amassed the biggest tank top collection ever (and by biggest, I mean I have like 8) and I've been having fun either turning dresses into tops under skirts or into skirts under tops! This was a lovely post! I think I may need to switch things up a bit more from now on! Aaaaaand, I just wrote you a novel!

  17. Interesting! I actually always wonder how other people organize their closets. For some reason, it's under the same type of curiosity as a "what's in my bag" post.

You're right though, I don't organize like you AT ALL. I actually organize my clothing by type of clothing, like tank tops, short sleeve, blouses, etc.

  20. I never thought that I could organize my closet by the layering potential of each piece, I just do it by season colours and type of item, but I think these tips are going to influence for good my wardrobe!
Thanks for sharing this ideas, this was very helpful! xx

  21. These are some really excellent tips and dare I say that "I'd never think of that" before :D
Love the tip about grouping tops by collars. Right now I do them by button-up/ non button up and sleeve length. Yours is so much better. And I was totally having a 'duh' moment when you categorized turtleneck as a type of collar. Touche!

  26. You're a wizard. Now all I need is a closet that holds all my clothes so I can actually move them from piles (by clothing type) on the bed into a closet.

  28. this post is amazing. i struggle greatly w/ too little closet space and then i have like hundreds of drawers...any tips for drawer organization? or do you strictly have closet space only?? what do you put in your drawers but socks/unders :)

  29. I organize my closet similarly with you, though I did not think of organizing tops by collar and of some other fine pointers here. You are fantastic! I sure will be using your tips, thank you for sharing! And it would be so wonderful to have a space enough for all the clothing next to each other instead of putting stuff away for a season... How do you deal with it?

I enjoy your blog very much, you are doing an amazing job, Marlen - no, YOU are amazing. :)
