Layering Shift Dresses

Ah New Years, it's right around the corner isn't it? I love the thought of that one special, almost magical night: the clock is reset while you're wearing a shimmering gown with a champagne glass in one hand and your best friend hanging off your arm, counting down the seconds til the book is closed on one year and reopens for the other. There are glitter-filled balloons and metallic streamers criss-crossing over your head like stars, and just as midnight ticks into place the whole room explodes with whoops and cheers and the noise of horns and clanking trinkets. That insane riot is always the sound of punch-drunk hope to me. Not just any kind of hope- but the delirious kind that makes you hug and jump simultaneously, letting thoughts like "anything can happen this year" giddily bounce around your head.

Usually when midnight rolls by no one blinks an eye- you don't even register that you have a new day on your hands and just continue to watch Nick at Night in your jammies while eating spoonfuls of nutella. But this one night calls for a Gatsby worthy party with equal amounts of booze and wonder. So what are we all up to during that one night?

And on a more sartorial note, who would have thought a mustard shift dress would be so versatile? This pretty little number is from New Old Fashion, and I usually nab anything and everything that's sleeveless like this because of the layering power. For example, with this dress I have already gone simple and just worn a turtleneck underneath it, but this time around I wanted to change it into a vest of sorts and paired it with my retro corduroy skirt. It really brings the outfit together and adds that last finishing touch!

And New Old Fashion is an amazing store, I've already nabbed quite a few classic pieces from there. Below are some of my favorite outfits I whipped up using their vintage! And if your style is classic and feminine, definitely check out their store here and see what they have :)

  1. Ah, you make NYE sounds quite magical!

This look has a fun collegiate vibe to it, for some reason.

  2. Happy new year to you! I won't be in on the champagne train this year due to pregnancy. Boo. But I will probably not make it up until midnight anyway. Also, it is a new moon on NYE so it's supposed to be extra good luck!

  3. I love your interpretation of New Years, sounds so exciting and I definitely want my NYE to feel like that!
Great layering!! Mustard is such a great colour on you, and your hair is looking extra lovely ;)

  4. I absolutely love your hair here, Marlen! The way you styled the shift dress is just lovely. Hope you have a happy New Year! My husband and I will probably be sleeping through it this year. :-)

  7. Well you fooled me - I totally thought this was one piece rather than a dress with a skirt over it haha. This outfit is super cute. It's funny how we all get so worked up about new year's eve and have to make sure that the last night of the year is perfect. I'll be spending it with my closest friends which is always a good time. Hope you have a fabulous evening tomorrow :)

  8. More and more I have begun to look at how layerable the items I purchase are. It really is important to buy things that you can remix a million ways. This shift dress is the perfect color to go with anything as well!
I love how you paint New Year's Eve. I've never been able to attend a party like that, but maybe I should make my own and invite people next year! It sounds magical!

  9. I love your New Years Eve short story- it sure sounds tempting and exciting for me, haha.. but it's true it doesn't seem like a dramatic thing when the day does come. :) Love your dresses- they seem so vintage and so cute! Happy New Year!xx

  12. Ah man, I know, the idea of having a fabulous New Years Eve has always had an allure for me. Sadly, I'm working that night so I don't think I'll get one this year :/
But the idea of a fresh new start and full of possibilities? That's always exciting!

  16. Man you are the queen of layering. I never would have thought to wear a shift dress in a vest-like manner. I'm kind of in love with your retro skirt here too. The colors are just so fun! You look awesome!
(P.S. Yeah I'm home already. We don't usually stay that long, but we were there almost 2 weeks. I'll be up for a week in March for a wedding but I'm not sure I'll be up there this summer. So maybe we can get together then!)

  24. Expectations versus reality, maaaan! If only we could all look like Cinderella while we fancily sip our sparkling drinks and watch the clock's tiny hands tick tickity tick. :) BUT YEAH I WAS ASLEPEP BY 11 SO.

I really like the yellow you're wearing *___* Mmm, yellow. And I agree with Jamie about the layering thing; you are definitely the queen of layering even though I have told you that time and time and time again. IT SO TRUE.

Also I am glad we both are gonna be fairy mermaid etc princesses this year. Let's do it.

  25. You make new years sound amazing! All I was doing for new years was snuggling my man in bed. haha.

Very pretty outfit. I love that you embrace vintage clothing. I always try but then I end up scared that I'll ruin the piece so I end up not buy/wearing any.

  26. That beret is stunning on you (I have a feeling it's because you are one of few women who can really make the beret look fantastic with layers and a simple hairstyle!). And even though my new years eve was intended to be "Gatsby-esque" I was right there with you, spoonfuls of nutella and all on the sofa in my cozy flannels! Happy new year!

  32. aw love the way you described that "magic" moment of NYE. I never really considered the "magic" of NYE and the clock striking midnight. You're right, we usually don't mind the transition from one day to the next but that NYE moment is pretty special. Everyone shares in the celebration and it's something everyone in the world can relate to. Pretty darn amazing now that you describe it that way. =)

    Happy new year!

  49. that skirt is amazing, your mother must have an awesome closet of vintage! and i loved seeing that mustard dress, def wouldn't have guessed at all the possibilities. and plaid... so many lovely skirts/dresses in it you have! and a nutella eating midnight actually is more exciting than our new year's this year, although jammies were worn.

  50. GOSH your layering kills me every time. I love the mustard color so much!!! And that skirt is amazing. And your hair is adorable.
On NYE, my husband and I hung out at my in-laws' house until 11:50 when things got boring, and then we went home. And daringly kissed quickly while still driving when it turned to midnight.
Yep. That was the height of our New Years Eve. We're partiers like that.
