Chartreuse is the Thing for Fall

Sep 18, 2013

I'm getting really into tucking vests into skirts (as we can see in my vest layering tips here and here) and this chartreuse one in particular has a bit of a story to it.

You see, I first found it at Goodwill and after noticing the color and the general Mr-Rogers-ness of it all, I decided I needn't try it on and just brought it home with me. Well there's a life lesson for you: always try the thing on, no matter how cheap it is. You guys, it was so over-sized I looked like a Ninja Turtle in it. The sleeves were as wide as gaucho pants (shudder) and the shoulders were so broad that they created a shell-looking silhouette on me. This was Mr. Roger's cardi only after a terrible breakup in which he gained eighty pounds. The thing was unworkable- but I loved the color so much that I couldn't admit defeat.

So biting my nail nervously, I threw a slow side-glance at the pair of scissors lying innocently on the kitchen counter. I quickly looked back down on the carpet, and stealing a breath I asked myself, "Dare I?". The reason for the dramatics is that I'm a danger to society with scissors. Seriously, I have the hemming skills of a blind woman with two arm casts on. For example, one time I had a body-con dress that had a zipper running down its front that I wanted to alter into a top, and so I proceeded to CUT THROUGH THE ZIPPER. Oh yes, it was very usable after. As a dusting rag.

So you can understand my hesitation. But I just knew it would look amazing with my Modern Hearts skirt and so, with my hand over my eyes, I braved the scissors and cut. And it worked! I love the end result of it, and I think there's a strong possibility that I'll be living in it all Fall long ;)

  10. I love the outfit! All the colours look so well together. You really have an eye for good combinations. And believe me, I can't alter clothing either. When I want to make a crop top out of a regular t-shirt I usually end up with a tube of fabric. Not exactly what I was looking for :P

  13. I know that scissor anxiety! I have some gorgeous cashmere sweaters that I thrifted--cashmere is my weakness--and I want to alter them, but I'm so scared! Congrats on plucking up the courage and getting such a great result :)

  14. Hahahahaha a danger to society! I just got a visual of you running the streets of Seattle with a pair of scissors in your hands terrorizing it's residents with your evil smirk and cackle! I do the same thing with clothes, I always take things too far when it comes to clothing. Cutting off an extra inch or two, cutting the wrong side etc... I just hand 'em over to my mum now. Mess free!

  23. You look lovely Marlen! I personally love chartreuse and I wish there would be more of it out there. I'm so glad that you were able to make the vest work for you, I've had my share of thrifting mistakes because I was too lazy to try on the clothes. Ugh... lesson learned. haha

  26. It really is a wonderful colour and I'm glad you braved it and cut it, it's perfect with this skirt. And the idea of you cutting through a zipper to try to make the dress into a top is so hilarious. I've done similar things, sewing is not my forte

  27. Haha oh man, I know, I pretty much hold my breath the entire time I try to alter stuff. Sometimes creating high-low skirts don't work out...
But glad this vest worked out for you! Its perfect with your layering abilities :)

  28. Great job cutting this! I never would have guessed that it was originally a full on sweater. I have cut many skirts so I definitely know how scary it is haha. An inch too much and it can be ruined. But it's so fun when it works out - you've crafted a super cute ensemble.

  43. "Tucking a vest into a skirt" is something that sounds so weird, but looks SO cute! I have one knit vest to my name that will be tucked into a skirt, ASAP! I don't always think I could pull-off the things you do, but I love love love the colors and pieces in this look.

lol, I am SO the same with DIY and any clothing edits. I made my FIRST pair of jeans cut-off into shorts and it was like, a holiday. Also nerve-wracking. But I think they turned out ok.
