A Dress Doesn't Need to be Just a Dress: Layering Ideas

As you know, I'm one that just can't leave well enough alone. When I see a pretty dress I can sometimes just appreciate the loveliness of it and pop a straw hat over it and call it a day, but, oh, that's very rarely. There's no satisfaction like a perfectly put together outfit, which is why I'm constantly rummaging around my closet and trying to come up with fun layering ideas to share with you. This past summer I've beaten my wardrobe into submission by pairing sleeveless dresses with collared tops, strapless dresses with longs-sleeve blouses, short sleeve dresses with long sleeved tops, and finagled vests into dress-like outfits. But even that can get same-old same-old when you do it all the time. So when getting ready for our walk in Pioneer Square on Saturday, I knew I wanted to wear my vintage Lacoste dress from Little Veggie Vintage, but didn't quite know how to top it off. It has sleeves you see, and sleeves can be a pesky thing when trying to layer.

So what I did was inverse the idea of layer-a-blouse-under-a-sleeveless-dress, and layered a sleeveless top on top of a sleeved dress (that's a lot of "sleeves", #tonguetwister). Since my Little Veggie Vintage dress had a bright, poppy pattern, I subdued it by taking a chambray top and tied it at the bottom to give it some proportion. And there we have it, a new layering idea was born! What do you think- would you try it?

And of all the neighborhoods I've explored in Seattle, Pioneer Square is by far my favorite. It's the historical district in town, and in the 1920's it was supposed to be plowed down to make one giant parking lot! I'm so glad it was spared, because all the charming, ivy covered buildings, open cobble-stoned plazas, and wrought iron benches have me pretending I'm walking through town in the 1940's, with nothing on my agenda but an open afternoon and a stop at a coffee shop to waste some time. I'd move there in a heartbeat, but what I've heard from locals is that it gets pretty sketch once the sun starts going down so maaaybe not.

  7. I love that dress and would have never thought to layer the sleeveless denim on top, it looks so good! I sure could go for a cow chips drop cookie right now haha! Also, I forgot to tell you this after you left a comment on my blog Friday, but I got an excited email from my mom that said "LOOK, someone commented on my Taiwan blog I wrote on my trip last year!" so I looked at the comment and it was you! I was like awww I "know" her mom! Anyway, I don't know if you knew it was my mom or not but she was so excited that a stranger found her blog and wrote a sweet comment :)
ALSO also I love how you re-did your favorite reads sidebar, and I love how you can appreciate the hardships of "sharing" a pizza with a boyfriend!

  12. Oooh dang girl, that totally is an inverse... you always have such a good way of looking at pieces. I have tons of dresses that will need to be layered soon into winter, so your little tips here and there are always helpful. I like this idea a lot... I must do it I MUST

Ugh, and your architectural photos are always most gorgemiss. Gorgemiss is totally a word, k. The fact that they are historical makes them all the more fun. I especially adore that shot of the ivy creepin' up those walls!

  26. I always love the idea of getting longevity from my dresses, but when i try to layer them they look frumpy. I love this opposite idea of layering something sleeveless over a dress with sleeves though! This is so cute! And are you from Seattle? I live in Portland! I've been wanting to meet PNW bloggers since I just moved here from CA. :) <3
