  3. I'm happy to hear that we all have psychotic neighbors. I can do a DIY post for handmade spears if you want. I decorated mine with washi tape to make it pretty. Just let me know in the comments.
Now that we got that out of the way, lets talk about my outfit! When I first received this southwest-but-groovy-but psychedelic pussy bow shirt from Leading Articles Vintage, I didn't know what I was going to pair it with, but I knew it was going to be cray-zay. I mean, to dress down a top like this would be criminal! A top like this begs for some creative vision, and I don't leave things begging.

So I took it over to my closet and started holding it up to my vast collection of skirts, and decided on a mustard number to really make those dusty maroons and browns pop. Then things sort of escalated from there, and I found myself reaching for items that played off of the colors in the pattern of the blouse. That's why I love loud tops the most- they lead to very exciting outfits. Make sure to pop over to Leading Articles Vintage yourself- you'll find many more fun pieces, as well as cute 70's house decor!

Here are some of my favorite picks: 1/ 2/ 3/ 4

Now, let me share a story of woe with you. So back when I was traveling through India, the bugs that bunkered down and shared bed space with me didn’t bug me all that much. Mosquitoes would stealthily fly just outside the window, waiting for their chance to stab and strike; bed bugs would leave tender kisses around my shins and on my face; and cockroaches would march across the floor like they owned the place, occasionally pointing at me to drive the point home. I mean, it was India. What was I going to do about it? As long as they didn’t get into my masala chips, we were cool.

But do I expect to be sitting in my Seattle apartment, and, out of nowhere, see little bed bugs scuttle across my retainer? No.

Did I? Yes.

God damnit. I’ve got neighbors brewing meth in the basement and bugs drafting battle plans and taking siege of my third floor apartment. I bet you one of those basement folks kept them in an ant farm, and now they escaped and are causing us an epidemic. This is me pinching the bridge of my nose in weariness.

I wake up every morning with patterned bite marks that look like mysterious crop circles on my thighs, and as I scratch my leg I sigh and think of how I totally got the short end of the stick this time. Because this time there aren’t even any masala chips to console me.

And Marc is just going off the deep end with this whole ordeal. Poor guy has been crawling around the carpet and picking up cereal crumbs in total suspicion, inspecting them carefully in case they’re bug skins. Or- my favorite part- he wakes up in the middle of the night in a harried panic and dives into inspecting our bed sheets with great vigor. And it’s my favorite because the flashlight blares into my face and I wake up thinking I somehow died and am face to face with the blinding light at the end of the tunnel.

Fun times at our household as of late.

Yesterday I nonchalantly suggested that we catch a few and tie their beheaded heads on floss, and hang those suckers off of the bed frame as a forewarning. I was sure we could find a few of those plastic sword skewers people put in their martinis. Instead of taking my suggestion, management decided to hire a bed bug sniffing dog to catch them instead.

You know, kind of like hiring Scooby Doo to sniff out the ghosts.

I suppose that’s why I’m not in management; I just don’t have the creative vision to go straight to the worst option that ever existed. My favorite part was when we came home and the bed was stripped down to the mattress and just left all ransacked and sad against the wall. It seems to me that Fido got to roll around a bit on my pillows and didn’t find any culprits whilst doing so. Welp, good for Fido.

As I went to go make the bed I, again, pinched the bridge of my nose in weariness. Ah, unit livin’.

  1. Ugh, bed bugs, the worst!! I'm sorry to hear that, and that you have such weird creepy neighbours. Bad luck for sure!
I love this skirt, such a gorgeous colour. Perfect with that top and vest :)

  2. Well...your apartment tales certainly make for good entertainment...for the rest of us.... ^^' Aha, now i feel like a jerk. Lol, but I can't stop laughing! I think your bed bug head/floss idea would work better. :)
Anyway, that is one fantastic printed blouse! It fits right into your wardrobe

  5. Love that skirt!

    Ladyface Blog

P.S! I answered all of your comment questions over on my blog!

  6. I'll be recreating this look come fall. Just sayin. and I am over the top obsessed with your hood. Can I please come be your neighbor??!

  7. Look at your beautiful hair! It is very Audrey Hepburn from Roman Holiday. Lovely!!

  8. Girl you are hilarious!! Not only is this look absolutely amazing- you're super cute to boot. Totally diggin the hair. And I didn't know you we're from Seattle!! Gosh I miss that place...

  9. hahaha OH Marlen!

first off: great outfit. I finally inherited a denim vest, and will definitely be using this look as inspiration for my next way to style it!

second: oh SO gross. Living in the South for a while has fully confirmed my suspicions that, yes, mosquitoes love me. And I'm living closer to the Cumberland River now, so I swear it's swampy by my house, and I do NOT go outside at dusk. I've already had a few "outside for three minutes/come back inside with three bug bites" moments. So, in short, I feel for ya. That is gross!

I would definitely go with the heads on a string of floss idea. Too funny.

    perfectly priya

  10. So cute! Love the outfit!

  11. What an absolute nightmare. Once my boyfriend's landlord was convinced the triplex (she lives in one unit) had bedbugs. For days we lived in fear of the dogs and spraying she said would be invading the apartment in bedbug pursuit. It turned out to be a false alarm and no action was taken, THANK GOD.

  12. I love that blouse paired with the mustard skirt - so so pretty!

  13. First of all, that is truly an amazing outfit.

Secondly, that whole bug ordeal sounds awful--I can't even imagine. Two years ago our home suffered a box elder bug invasion...but at least those don't bite and they don't get in your bed!

  14. I absolutely LOVE the way you styled this top! Thanks so much for reppin' Leading Articles and for looking so cute while doing so.

PS - I've been throughly enjoying your blog! You've got yourself a new daily reader here :-)

  15. Oh my gosh, I've gone through the whole bed bug ordeal. Twice. I feel for you, it's so awful. All I can say in terms of advice is keep everything as clean as possible, vacuum everything that's possible to vacuum and of course there's always powders and mattress protectors you can pick up to ward the existing ones off. Good luck!
And on a happier note, your outfit is awesome!

  16. Dude, I had bed bugs back in February and it was the WORST. I had to sterilize and wash everything, on top of a fumigation. Get some protective bed bug covers for your mattress and box-spring (you can get them at sears), and put double sided tape in the nooks and crannies of your apartment. Also put the tape around the inside of the frame, and the bottom of the the legs, so if the bed bugs try and crawl up they will get caught. Steam is the best way to kill them! I'd get on that STAT - those fuckers reproduce like no one's business.

  17. Your bed bug situation sounds awful : / I can somewhat relate - My old apartment was infested with cockroaches that I'd have to squish on a daily basis and in the summer we were bombarded with termites. Then one of the units got bed bugs and they made everyone fumigate twice which was hell but bed bug sniffing dogs doesn't sound fun either. City living problems lol. Hopefully you won't have to live with them much longer but at least you still manage to look fabulous :)

  18. I looove vintage pussybow blouses! I can't get enough of them.
The prints and all the colors in your outfit are amazing and they all oddly complement each other!
The blue backdrop is also the perfect color for your outfit :)

  19. This outfit is super cool Marlen! I love how eclectic it is without trying too hard. You are the queen of layering for sure - and have quite the keen eye for unique vintage pieces.

Argh - bed bugs! The very word grosses me out. I was at a summer camp as a kid and the whole dorm had an epidemic...not fun!

  20. You have such a talent for pulling together color in the best way!

Hope your apartment trials are soon ended. That sounds awful!

  21. I think the mustard skirt was the perfect choice! I looooove the print on that top - so pretty!

Oh, and I don't know if I've told you yet, but I really love your short hair! It's so stinkin' cute and it is so flattering on you!

I look forward to the tutorial on DIY spears :)

  22. Awesome! I love that skirt and the little belt, perfect! <3

  23. oh man, I am still freaking out that you have bedbugs when you didnt even get used furniture and whatnot, so creepy. and the strangest apartment people ever to not fumigate or something. but, i do love this combo, the top is so fun and perfect w/ the mustard skirt. lovin' the pretty leather sandals too.

  24. Oh lordy Marlen, that sucks! As a thrift store lover who always wants to bring home pillows, couches, etc., I know I should be super careful about this. Actually, I got paranoid just the other day after letting the neighborhood outdoor kitties come play in my apartment that they had given my apt fleas. I seriously left work early thinking I could feel crawlies on my hair, ugh, the worst. I think I was actually making it up, but i totally feel for you guys :(
On a completely different note though, this vintage blouse is amazing and I ADORED your home inspirations pinterest board!

  25. Hey girl! Love the blog. This outfit has some major fun going on.

Hoppin' over from my corner of the world....

    Melissa @

  26. Oh nooo! Not bed bugs. That seriously sucks so much. I'm pretty sure I would freak out big time if that happened to me. Hopefully they die soon!

In other news, I love your new top! The print is so much fun! I think the mustard skirt was a perfect match for it.

  27. BOO bedbugs!! I love this shirt though - super cool, you've styled it really well :-)
